Nicely composed, and very reportorial.

I think the most astonishing thing about this beautiful neighborhood is that although it was developed around 1907 as a leafy, bucolic suburb of Chicago, today all but three or four of the 120-or-so homes in this defined area were built in a the tiny era 1907-1925.

As eclectic as the houses are, the overall impression of the Villa is a consistent, creative vision.

Your photos captured this very nicely, Maribeth. Many thanks.

When we had our Chicago brick bungalow tuckpointed and cleaned two years ago, the Polish crew used a mixture of vinegar and water, and scrubbed each brick and mortar line with a brush. For weeks afterward, our bungalow smelled like a pickle.

Regarding Bernie's Wall. I don't believe erection of the wall was racially motivated -- that is, to keep the black folk of southern Evanston from mingling with the white folk of northern West Rogers Park. Black alderman in the Chicago City Council voted with Bernie to authorize construction of the wall.

Bernie was more concerned about keeping Chicagoans trapped in Chicago, preventing Chicago consumers from spending money in the stores (Target, Best Buy, Jewel-Osco food-drug store) on the Evanston side of the wall, where the sales tax is noticeably lower than in high-tax Chicago.

That was easier than lowering the cost of government in Chicago, and reducing the Chicago sales tax.

Dan Miller
Talman AvenueDan Millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05979136883538234178noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7809154966623662341.post-56610485607623315512010-05-02T23:42:39.465-05:002010-05-02T23:42:39.465-05:00I heard it was a wonderful tour. They look like some of the houses in the Southend of Louisville,KY. But there are a lot of houses there that are lots of different styles from victorian to modern. However, the victorians in historic Louisville get more attention than any house in the southend. you should take a look if you are this far down I-65 someday. Hell, you can see a lot of historic houses just passing thru from I-65 after the river. we preserve them as well.dudemanltihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00381271205933045693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7809154966623662341.post-51737607348060859502009-09-02T00:37:23.659-05:002009-09-02T00:37:23.659-05:00That's a nice little garden. I worked for a previous owner David Claybough (1993)who introduced me to Bungalows with this house on Talman.I now own a octagon front bungalow in WR. I worked with David on the refinishing of woodwork and walls, adding paneled walls to the Dining room etc. while he rearranged the second floor and added the master bathroom. He expanded the kitchen and added the deck and pergola, turned the garage door to the back and removed the driveway to create a side yard. When all was done it was an amazing home.A few years ago I ran across a book that featured the house and the pictures of the interior looked exactly the same as the last time I saw the home just before David moved. I couldn,t help notice the owners at the time the book was published took the credit for the restoration. I thought back on all the hours of meticulous work that it took, the love David put into the finishes, colors and a barage of contractors and had a good laugh. I don't know how many times it has changed hands since then but I hope they have taken good care of that great bungalow.

PaulAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16985012923549952520noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7809154966623662341.post-54957446498789293222008-03-09T12:17:00.000-05:002008-03-09T12:17:00.000-05:00I found that the N:Vision brand of CFL that is ava...I found that the N:Vision brand of CFL that is avalaible at Home Depot has a very good color temp. chart on each package and these lights come in 3 different color ratings: Daylight, Bright White, and Soft White. The Soft White version is really close to an incandescent. I found that the bulbs that are bigger than the 15 watt(60 equiv.)are more practical as a work light. I have a 43 watt(150 equiv.) in my vintage kitchen fixture and now the kitchen is as bright as it's ever been.Steve Knoebberhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05573687752560584489noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7809154966623662341.post-65213681353272411312008-01-31T16:33:00.000-06:002008-01-31T16:33:00.000-06:00I grew up in Rogers park and to me it is home..alt...I grew up in Rogers park and to me it is home..although I left it for several chapters in my adulthood.Every childhood memory incolves "the patch"the schools church and stores. Right now, I only have one CFL bulb installed, and that's in my little office lamp. It has a shade around it, so maybe that helps. But I don't have a grey/green pallor or anything like that...it's a nice, warm, yellowish glow, kind of like an incandescent. It's a GE energy smart 15-watt (60 equiv.) bulb, so maybe that's why. I've read in other places complaints about it too, though...maybe once I get more of them, I'll notice the difference...but this one seems fine.Andyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14283888397129595640noreply@blogger.com
